A 31-year-old man in an altered mental state has been on a fire escape in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district for roughly 12 hours, a police spokeswoman said Friday morning.
Police are continuing to negotiate with the man who is threatening to jump from a building at the intersection of Taylor and Eddy streets, San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

The man had been standing on the fire escape since 9:51 p.m. on Thursday. He is not suspected of committing any crimes, Gatpandan said.
Police are advising people to avoid the area and said only employees who work in the nearby buildings are being allowed through the area.
Pedestrians and motorists are not being allowed to pass through Taylor Street between Turk and Ellis streets or through Eddy Street between Jones and Mason streets, Gatpandan said.
A white man with a black T-shirt and blue jeans is visible on the fire escape from the ground below. Small crowds of people have gathered at the intersections near the building.
The man is animatedly gesturing with his hands and body and yelling both toward the street and the building.
From the ground the man can be heard yelling “shut up” and a mix of profanities.
Gatpandan said a team of negotiators have been talking to the man since last night and a family member is on scene as well.
She said that everyone is working to get the man to back inside the building and into the care of medical professionals.
