“One of the other officers could hear the suspect saying, ‘Shoot me, shoot me,” SFPD chief Greg Suhr said during a news conference.
The whole thing started at around 7 a.m. when police received a call about wreck on South Airport Boulevard. A witness told police the suspect collided with a light post and fled the scene carrying a backpack, Suhr said.

The suspect then fled to the long-term parking structure at the airport and apparently changed his clothes and emerged a short time later. That was when a motorcycle officer spotted the suspect and questioned him, Surh said.
When the officer asked the suspect to release the bag, the suspect ran and attempted to carjack a vehicle on westbound San Bruno Avenue that had stopped at a stop light, Surh said. After the carjacking victim refused to drive away, the suspect then fled on foot and hid in some bushes near State Route 101.
After the suspect emerged from the bushes, officers ordered to the suspect to stop and gun point, but the suspect refused and charged at police. One shot was fired and missed the suspect, a second shot hit the suspect in the abdomen.
“The suspect’s right hand was obscured,” when he charged the officer, Suhr said.
According to witnesses, the officer showed restraint, Suhr said.
The officer involved was uninjured in the shooting and will be placed on paid leave while the investigation is ongoing as per department’s police, Suhr said.
The suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is in serious, but stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital, Suhr said.
The car the suspect wrecked was stolen and belonged to San Francisco Marathon runner who was participating in the marathon at the time of the incident. The vehicle was parked near the airport while its owner was running in the marathon.
