Free Workshops for Parents of South City Middle Schoolers

Beginning next week, the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center will begin a 6-workshop series to help parents of South City middle schoolers to foster positive learning environments for their kids.

PCRC is looking for at least 12 families to sign up for the free series to learn to advocate for their kids' needs in schools, establish relationships with teachers and make home environments conducive to learning.

Domingo Jarquin, a violence prevention program associate with PCRC, said that the middle school phase often creates unique challenges for students and for family reslationships.

"This is the time where many teens find themselves distancing from their parents and as a result conflict or misunderstanding arises," Jarquin said.

At the workshops, parents will be encouraged to strengthen relationships with their kids through "home-team" building, getting-to-know one another activities and problem solving.

These workshops are currently only scheduled to take place in South San Francisco, and are open to any parent of a middle school student within the city limits. Jarquin said that the group may put on similar classes in other peninsula towns in the future.

The series will be held at Parkway Heights Middle school from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the following days: Dec. 13, Jan. 17, Feb. 21, Mar. 21, Apr. 18 and May 16.
