Speed Limit Changing on El Camino Real in South San Francisco

The speed limit is being reduced along portion of the roadway with the highest traffic collision rates resulting in bodily injury, cops say.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Drivers who travel along the El Camino Real corridor on the Peninsula are being warned of a change in the speed limit.

The posted speed limit along El Camino Real in South San Francisco is being reduced by 5 mph in an effort to reduce accidents, according to police officials.

After conducting a traffic study in the fall of this year, Caltrans determined that it would reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 35 mph on the road, which runs all the way through the city, according to South
San Francisco police.

"The replacement of the 40 mph signage to 35 mph signage is already occurring," police said in a statement.

All other cities in San Mateo County already use a posted 35 mph speed limit on El Camino Real, according to the police.

"Statistics indicate that within South San Francisco city limits, the El Camino Real corridor has the highest traffic collision rates resulting in bodily injury," police said. "We sincerely hope that this reduction in speed will result in increased safety with injuries prevented and lives saved."
