SSF Supervisor Takes On Larger Role In County Government

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Supervisor Dave Pine as the new board president during their regularly scheduled meeting in Redwood City.

Pine's priorities as incoming president include transportation and water issues like sea level rise as well as flood resiliency and hiring a county manager to replace John Matlbie, who in December announced plans to retire by the end of 2018.

County staff said in a statement the board spent much of last year dealing with "unknowns" stemming from the Trump administration's actions on health care, immigration and climate change -- and Pine Tuesday reaffirmed the county's commitments to diversity, inclusion and environmental protection against a stark and threatening national backdrop.

"Every day we wake up and read the national news and are reminded that this is a difficult and tumultuous time for our country," Pine said.

"Many of the values and policy priorities that we hold dear in San Mateo County are under threat," he said. "While we cannot control the course of events in Washington, what we do locally matters and is an expression of our values."

Pine represents District 1, which includes Burlingame, Hillsborough, Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco east of El Camino Real and San Francisco International Airport. He was first elected to the board of supervisors in 2011, and previously served as board president in 2014.

Pine is replacing former board president Supervisor Don Horsley, who represents District 3, and District 2 Supervisor Carole Groom is stepping up to fill Pine's former role as vice president.
