Downtown LA Suspect in Custody After 4-Hour Standoff

Officers were sent to the area of Eighth and Santee streets on a report of shots fired shortly before noon.

LOS ANGELES, CA --A man allegedly fired a shot at a passing vehicle Monday, then holed up inside a downtown Los Angeles apartment building for about four hours before being taken into custody.

Officers were sent to the area of Eighth and Santee streets on a report of shots fired shortly before noon. The suspect allegedly fired a single shot at a vehicle, but no one was hit by the gunfire, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man, in his 20s, was believed to be armed with a handgun, police said.

A SWAT team was called in and residents were advised to shelter inside their apartments with their doors locked as police conducted a room-by-room, floor-by-floor search.

Police announced about 4 p.m. that the man, who was not immediately identified, had been taken into custody. It was not immediately clear if a firearm was recovered.

Vehicles were routed away from the building during the standoff, snarling traffic in the area.
