The Sisyphus Award is a reference to the mythological Greek King, Sisyphus, who was punished by Zeus for thinking he was more clever than the king of the gods. For eternity, Sisyphus was condemned to push an enormous stone up a hill, only to have it roll back down before he could complete the task. Thus, according to the coalition, βthe award is given to those who work infinitely and tirelessly to improve transportation on all fronts.β
Throughout California, 19 county transportation agencies have formed the SHCC, including Contra Costa and Sacrmaneto counties, both of which are part of Frazierβs district. Each county delivers voter-approved (by super-majority) transportation sales tax measures that fund transit, highway, freight, bicycle, pedestrian and other mobility programs. Together, these counties provide $3 to $4 billion each year into Californiaβs transportation infrastructure, creating jobs, expanding mobility and enhancing local communities and the environment.
