BREAKING: Just before 8 p.m. Thursday, Fairfield police advised that the SWAT team would be deploying tear gas toward the subject's house.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA -- UPDATED: Following an hours-long standoff in a Fairfield neighborhood Thursday, two people -- described only as a male and a female -- were "safely detained" at about 8:30 p.m. after tear gas was deployed into a residence, according to police. In an update just before 9 p.m., Fairfield police said it was safe for residents who voluntarily evacuated the 1400 block of Michigan Street to return home. Officers have cleared the targeted residence and secured it, police said, noting that more details about the incident, which involved an "armed and barricaded subject," would likely be released sometime late Friday morning.
Officers first responded to the area when dispatchers received a call at 3:09 p.m. about a disturbance inside a house on Michigan Street -- off Travis Boulevard near Solano Town Center and NorthBay Medical Center.
As officers arrived they heard several gunshots from the area of the house, police said. A perimeter was established and officers made phone contact with those inside the residence.
