Cigarette, Dried Potted Plant Spread Vacaville Apartment Fire - Not an Arsonist

Investigators updated the cause of Monday's blaze as accidental.

Vacaville police said an apartment fire that was believed to have been deliberately set early Monday was actually accidental.

A Vacaville fire department investigator believed the fire at 1:32 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Gable Avenue was arson, police Sgt. Steve Carey said. The fence was on fire when firefighters arrived and the blaze quickly spread to the eaves and attic of the apartment, Carey said.

After an investigation, it was determined the fire was accidental in nature, Lt. Matt Lydon said this afternoon.

“The fire was started by a resident who had been smoking a cigarette on the patio,” Lydon said.

A dried potted plant caught fire and the flames spread to a redwood fence and the eaves of the roof, Lydon said.

Police initially thought a person of interest who lives in the area was responsible for setting the fire, but that was ruled out, Lydon said.
