Court sides with Delta advocates

Assemblymember Jim Frazier calls ruling "a rare, yet sweet, victory"

AUG. 3, 2016 – Assemblymember Jim Frazier, D-Oakley, today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recent ruling that the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) by renewing a series of two-year delivery contracts for agricultural customers located south of the Delta:

β€œAfter numerous lawsuits, the court’s decision validates what environmental and Delta advocates have been saying for years. This is a rare, yet sweet, victory for those of us calling for restrained pumping levels and a closer look into the detrimental effects to the Delta’s ecosystem.

β€œWhile the protection of endangered species is vital, we must also continue to defend the Delta as a whole and the way of life for this extraordinary community. Moving forward, I hope we take a serious look at alternatives and engage in real conversations on ways to reach this co-equal goal.”
