When Did It Last Snow In Suisun?

You Ask, Patch Answers

With recent reports of there being snow in 49 of 50 states in the US, and throughout 70 percent of the country, there has been a lot of talk of the peculiarity of the event. But when did it last snow in Suisun City?

According to records from the Western Regional Climate Center in Reno, NV, the last time the area received snow was December 27, 1988. It was then that the center’s Fairfield station recorded 1.5 inches of the white stuff. Official Suisun City information, however, was not available.

“That’s the nearest official station,” said Jim Ashby, service climatologist.

Despite the lack of record keeping in Suisun City, it is a well know fact to residents that snow is extremely rare. In fact, this year it snowed in Southern California, but not here. Former Mayor, Guido Colla, lived in Suisun City most of his life.

“My parents moved to Suisun in 1926,” said Colla. “I was just two years old, I’m 86 now.”

Colla, who calls Suisun City his “lifeblood,” was living in the Green Valley area of Fairfield in 1988. He remembers that day, however, because the snowfall was more significant than he had seen in years for the area. He recalls, while growing up, there had been many times where snow had fallen in Suisun City, though it was not enough to play in.

“It was snow but it didn’t last very long,” said Colla.

The Vacaville Heritage Council has a picture of a day before Colla's time in either 1913 or 1915 where the snow did stick in downtown Suisun City. You can see the masonic building on the right, just down the street.
