Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Patch had a chance to talk with Luke Harmon, Director of Entertainment Operations for The Bornemann Theatre.

Patch: Tell us a bit about your business or organization:
Luke Harmon: The Bornemann Theatre is San Marcos’ premier 200-seat indoor venue offering live entertainment – from concerts and comedy to theater, film, and more. Located on the beautiful TERI Campus of Life, it’s a hub for good times and community connection. Plus, all proceeds from ticket sales help to support TERI’s quality programs and services for the special needs community.

Patch: How long have you been doing business in town, or how long has your organization been around in the community?
Luke Harmon: Since May of 2024.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Luke Harmon: I grew up in a family dedicated to serving the special needs community; my mother even ran an organization with some programs similar to TERI in Arizona. While theatre was my first love—I’d been acting since I was 6 years old—the values of service and community were deeply ingrained in me. I pursued a theater arts degree at Arizona State University. During that time, I took a job in the restaurant industry, a soul-sucking experience that pushed me to find work with more meaning. That’s when I found my first role supporting adults with special needs, working for a residential program. I planned games and activities that helped individuals with higher support needs build connections with their community and improve their behavioral skills.

Patch: What's the most common piece of advice you give to customers?
Luke Harmon: The arts have the power to transform people's lives and music is therapy!

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Luke Harmon: I get to spend my days overseeing live entertainment for The Bornemann. By day, I get to run a theater that is home to our TERI Players, a talented ensemble of artists enrolled in TERI’s day program for adults who are developing their unique gifts for performing. By night, I get to transform that same stage into a vibrant community entertainment hub, booking tribute bands, theater productions, artists, and comedy acts. My background in theater production, arts education, and nonprofit work has converged perfectly with every step about building community through the arts.

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Luke Harmon: The Bornemann is a space for everyone! In addition to all proceeds from ticket sales and concessions supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, when you come to the Bornemann, you get an elevated theater experience with great sound, free parking, and comfortable seating. There is no bad seat at The Bornemann!
