PERRIS, CA — A controlled burn was underway near the March Air Reserve Base in Perris, the California Highway Patrol dispatch operators said.

Shortly after 7:15 a.m. CHP operators reported that a controlled burn was slated to take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

This is a controlled burn, according to CHP and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, who were also notified of the fire activity on the reserve base.

The land in and around March Air Reserve Base can pose a wildfire risk if brush is not tended.

Prescribed fire and controlled burns help reduce the chance of wildfire and unexpected blazes, according to Cal Fire. "As a land management tool, prescribed fire is an efficient and cost-effective way to reduce fuels where physical and social conditions are conducive to its use."
