Temecula Sinkhole: Latest On Repairs, Closure

TEMECULA, CA — A portion of a major Temecula roadway remained closed Thursday after a large sinkhole developed a day earlier. However, officials say repairs on Jefferson Avenue are well underway.

Crews worked through the night and have been at the site near Rancho California Road all day, to repair both the broken water lines and the road above. Two lines, a 24 inch one and a 16 inch one, apparently burst in the Wednesday night incident.

As of the latest update from the city of Temecula, crews are working to open the two southbound lanes of Jefferson to allow thru traffic — as they keep the northbound side closed to repair those lanes — are expected to be open sometime Thursday evening, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

"Moreover, the segment of Jefferson Avenue from Calle Cortez to Rancho California Road will remain shut down entirely until then," the city said. "There is no water to any businesses from Via Montezuma to Jefferson."

Water is not expected back at those businesses until after repairs are made on at least the southbound side.

The northbound side of the roadway is not expected to be repaired until sometime Friday or Saturday. Rancho Water was held up a bit due to the availability of parts for the northbound side's repairs, according to the city.
