Temecula Teen's Body Washes Ashore In Huntington Beach

The body of the 18-year-old woman was found about 24 hours after a missing persons search was called off.

TEMECULA, CA — A Temecula woman died this week in an apparent drowning near the Huntington Beach Pier. The 18-year-old's body was discovered Thursday — approximately 24 hours after a search was called off — in the water nearby, the coroner's office confirmed Friday.

Orange County coroner's officials on Friday positively identified Jessy Cook in the case. Her disappearance prompted a multi-agency search on Tuesday when some of her belongings were found near the pier and the woman seemingly vanished into the water around 11:45 p.m.

"The deceased was a missing person last seen on 2/6/2018 near the Huntington Beach Pier," a report from the coroner's office states. "She was found in the ocean south of the pier on 2/8/2018."

The U.S. Coast Guard searched "nearly 137 square nautical miles" for approximately 11 hours, according to a statement from the agency.

The search, using boats and at least one helicopter, included Huntington Beach lifeguards and personnel from the Huntington Beach Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Divers, on what was described as a recovery operation, were later recalled after their search turned up no sign of the young woman.
