The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society (TVGS) was founded in January 1998. The Society's mission is to provide a genealogical society for the community, to encourage and stimulate interest in genealogical research, and to provide a forum for the exchange of genealogical information and help. “The first meeting of the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society brought together 50 people; 42 of whom joined the new society that night. Now 20 years later, with a membership of more than 100, our society has a wide range of activities for everyone interested in family history ”, stated Barbara Perez, TVGS President. She continued, “Knowing the lives of our ancestors helps us to better understand our own lives, and Temecula Valley Genealogical Society is committed to helping others discover their own family history.”
TVGS hosts monthly educational meetings that are open to the public and include professional speakers on topics ranging from history to the latest in genealogical research and technology. The meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 7 pm in the Temecula City Hall complex. The Society also offers special interest groups that provide more focused information on topics such as: DNA; German, Hispanic, and African American family history research; a writer’s group; and a computer users group. The special interest groups’ meetings are held at other times of the month. For more information about these meetings see the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society website at https://tvgs.net.
Since its beginning, TVGS has continued to grow in terms of the variety of events, activities and in membership. They have one or two social events each year, offer research trips to other libraries and resources, and have made presentations to schools and community groups. Their book collection, at the Ron Roberts Library in Temecula, has grown considerably in the past 20 years. Additionally, they offer help with genealogical research to residents of the Temecula Valley twice a month at the library. For the past four years the Society has sponsored an annual scholarship contest and awarded scholarships to local high school seniors.
