Ukiah's fiber optic internet project nearly one-third complete (localnewsmatters.org subscription) — Ukiah’s new city-owned gigabit fiber network is already 32% built, with the first zones slated to go live by the end of June and full completion targeted for October. The project will connect hundreds of unserved homes, offer new high-speed internet options citywide, and save the city millions over time while improving connectivity for police, fire, and other facilities.

2. Eight downtown Ukiah businesses vandalized, business owner helps neighbor all night • The Mendocino Voice (mendovoice.com) — Several downtown Ukiah businesses recently had their windows smashed overnight, but neighboring owners stepped up to board up storefronts and keep shops secure. A local pawn shop co-owner organized repairs for her own business and a nearby CBD skincare shop, which is now struggling with reduced walk-in traffic while relying on online sales. Police arrested a Ukiah man on suspicion of vandalism-related charges, and no injuries or thefts were reported.

3. Mendocino Transit Authority takes delivery of three new ZEBs from Endera (masstransitmag.com) — Ukiah riders will soon see two new zero-emission buses added to Mendocino Transit Authority’s fixed-route service, boosting capacity in the city and county seat. The vehicles, purchased through a statewide cooperative program, are meant to improve reliability and sustainability while meeting growing ridership demand alongside a third new bus serving Willits.

4. CAL FIRE Performing Prescribed Burn Along Highway 101 South of Ukiah Starting Today (kymkemp.com) — If you’re driving Highway 101 south of Ukiah over the next couple weeks, expect controlled traffic and visible smoke as CAL FIRE conducts evening prescribed burns between Nelson Ranch Road and Ridgewood Grade. Crews will burn about 400 acres of roadside grass Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. to reduce wildfire risk and give firefighters live-fire training. Emergency vehicles and aircraft will be active in the area.

5. North Coast Opportunities closed seven programs in two years • The Mendocino Voice (mendovoice.com) — North Coast Opportunities, based in Ukiah, has closed or spun off seven local programs in the past two years, including the State Street Community Garden and Caring Kitchen. Leaders cite funding shortfalls and accounting corrections, while local officials and former staff question the abrupt communication and whether all funding options were fully pursued.
