5 Arrests At Union City DUI Checkpoint

UNION CITY, CA — The Union City Police Department made 5 arrests when it held a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 17.

According to UCPD Lt. Steve Mendez, three of the arrests were for DUI, one was for an outstanding warrant and the other for driving with no Ignition Interlock Device. Of the DUI arrests, two were for marijuana and the other was for alcohol.

An additional 27 citations were written - 8 for driving with a suspended driver’s license and 19 for driving with no license.

Just over 1,400 vehicles were screened.

While the checkpoint is done, police will be out in force through the Labor Day Weekend enforcing DUI laws. At the time the checkpoint was announced, the department reported, "the Union City Police Department is participating in a high-visibility national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. During this period, Police and Sheriff's Departments statewide, along with the California Highway Patrol, will increase the number of officers on the road to stop suspected drunk or drug impaired drivers and motorcyclists. If you are caught driving or riding impaired, you can be pulled over and arrested."

Here are safety tips from the Union City Police Department:

• Always designate a sober driver.

• Have a plan to get home safely. Think about using public transportation or a ride sharing service to get home.

• Think about taking the keys away from friends or family members who are impaired and/or help them make arrangements to get home safely.

• Report drunk drivers - call 911.
