Bird Hunting Coming To San Francisco Bay Site

Waterfowl hunting will be allowed on 10 specific days this fall and winter at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve in the East Bay.

HAYWARD, CA — There will be opportunities for waterfowl hunting on select dates in November, December and January at the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve in Hayward, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Tuesday.

The roughly 6,400-acre reserve, which includes former commercial salt ponds now managed by state wildlife officials as a water bird habitat will be open for 100 hunters on each of the select dates on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The dates are Nov. 17 and 20, Dec. 1, 6, 15 and 20, and Jan. 5, 10, 19 and 24. People should check in at 5 a.m. on the November and December dates and 5:30 a.m. for the January ones.

Hunters 18 or older must have a valid California hunting license, a federal duck stamp and state duck and HIP validations. Those under 18 must have a junior hunting license, and if they are 16 or 17 they also need a federal duck stamp, state wildlife officials said.

There is a 25-shell limit for hunters in the field and non-lead ammunition is required when hunting in all state wildlife areas and ecological reserves.

State wildlife officials recommend that people use a small boat, canoe or other flotation device to navigate the site and use a hunting dog to retrieve birds.

People can get to the reserve from Interstate Highway 880 by exiting at Alvarado Boulevard and heading west, then turning right onto Union City Boulevard, left onto Bettencourt Road, left on Whipple Road, right on Horner Street, right on Veasy Street, then should enter at the yellow gate to the check station.
