Girls Basketball: Logan Beats Granada Again
Colts advance in NCS, will play Berkeley or Foothill on Wednesday
No. 5 James Logan 47, No. 13 Granada 34
The Star: Defense has been its forte and it didn't stop Friday night. Christina Campbell led the Colts with 12 blocks; Camille De Leon and Kalleen Correia all had steals in the win.
The Turning Point: Logan woke up in the second quarter and played like it had for most of the season. Kalleen Correia and Rose Tahaafe accounted for 13 of the 18 points scored.
The Quote: "This is a big win for us because every one doubted us," Kalleen Correia said. “(The fodder) was from every where, people — including their players — thinking we were going to lose. Even though we beat them before, people were still doubting us. That's how it is. Even when we're playing well, we still have doubters."
What's Next: The Colts travel to Berkeley on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The mantra for the girls basketball team, not coincidentally the reason for its success, all season has consisted of one word: defense.
However, the girls decided to add on to it. Friday's North Coast Section playoff match up against Granada, the game was all about: respect.

Perhaps, the No. 5 Colts wil get what they feel is deserved after beating No. 13 Granada for the second time this season, 47-34, in the first-round of the NCS Division I playoffs.
Some of the Colts felt slighted leading up to this game. While doing research on the Matadors, Colts players said they found places online where people stated they would lose to Granada. Even after having already beaten them by 31 on Dec. 27.
The fodder was used as preverbal bulletin board material, and provided extra motivation.
"This is a big win for us because every one doubted us," said Correia. “(The fodder) was from everywhere, people — including their players — thinking we were going to lose. Even though we beat them before, people were still doubting us. That's how it is. Even when we're playing well, we still have doubters."
De Leon says all the negative chatter is being used as positive reinforcement. They've accepted the label to prove the non-believers wrong.
"We like it now, knowing we're the underdog," said De Leon. "It's helps us come out stronger, fight harder and play at another level."
That strength proved itself valuable against Granada, which had a favorable advantage in size and physical power. Logan got off to a slow start, a trend of late.
It shot 29 percent (4-of-14) in the 1st quarter, with most shots missed from inside the key. Once Logan found its legs in the second, it pulled away quickly.
Correia led the Colts with 10 points (seven in the second), adding four steals, three assists and two rebounds. She was the only Colt to reach double-digits in points.
Point guard Camille De Leon led Logan in assists with five, contributing nine points and six steals. Her three-pointer at 4:30 of the third gave Logan a 34-20 lead, its largest of the night.
For the majority of the contest, the Colts defense was outstanding. It held Granada to single digits through the initial three quarters, and would have for four had its starters finished the game.
Though, it wasn't perfect. It couldn't contain McKenna Daly, who led all scorers with 20 points. Overall, coach Frank Borghi was pleased with the effort.
"We take a lot pride in our defense; it’s we've worked in since day one," Borghi said. "We've sat around hearing other people say other teams in the (MVAL) are better defensively. We think we play pretty good defense. We don't have the size, but we play as hard as any one."
Whether they get the respect is yet to be seen. If not, maybe they should change their victory song from Bruce Springsteen’s "Glory Days" to something by Aretha Franklin.
She knows a little bit about respect.
