Logan Bullies Irvington High

James Logan High School continued their unbeaten season Friday, shutting out Irvington High School 64-0 during their homecoming game.

The Colts (7-0) bullied Irvington High School (4-3) all night long, limiting the Viking offense to 142 yards, while dishing out 386 yards on offense and six touchdowns on only 23 offensive plays.

Logan High’s offense got off to a quick start. They scored the first touchdown on their first offensive possession and didn’t look back.

Colts quarterback Jeffrey Prothro looked decisive in the pocket. Although he only threw seven passes, he connected on five of those for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Prothro has only two interceptions this season.

“Our quarterback makes really good decisions. He’s not gonna force the football,” said head coach George Zuber.

More impressively was Prothro’s pocket presence. He chose correctly when to scramble and that led to decent yardage and a couple of first downs. Prothro ended the night with 87 yards on five rushes.

The quarterback said the Viking’s defense loaded the box with eight players, allowing his offense to exploit deep throws.

“They were kind of stacking the box, blitzing linebackers, so we wanted to get down the field (to) get outside with our speed. That worked out well for us,” said Prothro.  

Coach Zuber agreed with his quarterback and said his team used passing plays to set up their running game against the Viking’s aggressive defensive front.

“Once we did that our running game opened up and our drives were pretty quick drives,” Zuber said.

The Colts’ tallied 232 yards on the ground, behind their two tailbacks, Warren Long and Damond Beasley as well as Prothro. Long scored three times on six rushes and finished the game with 47 yards. Beasley led the team with 98 yards on four rushes and a touchdown.

The defense did not disappoint either. Logan High defenders flew all over the gridiron, making several big hits and forcing the ball away from Viking offensive players.

As tough as the Colt defense played, they weren’t able to stop senior tailback Raeshawn Lee; who ran hard between tackles and gained yards even after looking like defenders had him down.

“I tip my hat. He’s a heck of a runner and a lot of his yards were yards after contact,” Zuber said. “We had him wrapped up and he just found a way to spin out for a few more yards and almost broke a few.”

Lee finished the game with 107 yards on 16 carries. His performance made up roughly 75 percent of the Viking’s offense Friday night.

“They’re tough, I’m gonna give them that,” Lee said. “I had to just read some of the backfield and defensive stuff, and I just had to roll with it.”

“Our line was trying their hardest, but they’re just a little tougher than us.”

Lee was all over the field for the Vikings, playing all three side of the ball -- offense, defense and special teams.

Viking’s head coach Zach Silvernale complimented Logan High on their dominant performance. He said the Colts controlled the line of scrimmage all game and did not commit any mistakes or turnovers.

The coach also gave his tailback, Lee, a lot of credit for the tough running against a difficult defense. “He ran his tail off.”

“We wanted to control the clock, like we normally do on offense, and on defense we wanted to not give up the big play,” said Silvernale. “But that was something we couldn’t really do. That’s a big, powerful team.”

Silvernale said his team would try to get healthy during the bye week.

Logan High School will be facing Kennedy High School (0-7) next week.
