New Haven Unified Awarded $1.3 Million Grant to Support STEM in Classrooms

Last week, staff received news that New Haven Unified was awarded a California Math and Science Partnership (CaMSP) Grant for STEM education. We are calling it the CREATES Grant. The Collaborative Resources in Education to Advance Technology Engineering and Science (CREATES) Grant is a partnership led by New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD) with San Jose State University’s College of Science and STEM Education Center and Our Lady of the Rosary School in Union City.

Forty-four third through eighth-grade teachers in all of our elementary and middle schools will participate in a summer “intensive” with follow up release days, for a total of 60 hours of professional development. After each intensive, teachers will engage in follow-up hours including school site collaboration, technology-based collaborations across sites, and online learning for 24 hours per year. Teachers will develop content knowledge and skills to implement inquiry-based lessons and curricula aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Specifically, the content will address integrated Science and Technology with an emphasis on design principles and engineering standards, along with select physical, earth and life science content.

Professional development for teachers who signed-up to participate will begin in August of 2016. More information regarding the professional development will be available in 2016.
