The suspect, a neighbor of the victim, is in jail on suspicion of attempted murder. A woman was covered in blood when found Monday.

UNION CITY, CA — Police say a Union City woman leaving for work Monday was attacked in her carport by a 22-year-old neighbor, who repeatedly stabbed and kicked her. In a written report, Union City Police say, "The victim fiercely fought against her attacker by warding off knife strikes, and multiple kicks, all while attempting to bring attention to her attack by honking her vehicle horn. The victim’s will to survive is commendable."

The latest update on the victim's condition was released by police on Tuesday. At that time she was at Eden hospital in critical but stable condition.

The accused, 22-year-old Chad Parker of Union City, is being held on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted robbery, and aggravated mayhem.

Police say the attack began just after 8:30 a.m. Monday when the woman was getting into her car, parked in her home's carport, in the 2200 block of Partridge Way. Parker approached her and said that he believed that his mail might have been mixed with her mail and asked if they could check. The victim said no, that she was on her way to work, and they could check later. She got into her vehicle to leave, but was attacked. "Parker stabbed and sliced the victim numerous times," police said. "Parker pulled her out of her vehicle and began kicking her. Parker then walked away only to come back to resume kicking her in the head and stabbing her in the chest."

Police believe the question about mail may have been a ploy to rob the victim. They think that when the robbery attempt failed, "Parker attempted to kill the victim in order to protect his identity."

After the attack, police say Parker walked home and tried to destroy evidence related to the case.

The victim's name has not been released by police.
