Teen Shot, Killed This Morning Planned to Join Marines

Police are asking for help tracking down three teenage suspects who shot and killed a Hayward High School student out walking early this morning, a police sergeant said. The 17-year-old Hayward resident was out walking with a friend, a teen girl, in the area of Arf Avenue and Morningside Drive at about 1 a.m. when they were confronted by three other teens, police Sgt. Ruben Pola said.

After a brief exchange, one of the three suspects shot the teen, who died at the scene a short time later. His friend was uninjured, Pola said. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. While the victim’s name has not been released, Pola said he was a “good student” at Hayward High School, where he played sports and had no problems He has been training to enter the U.S. Marine Corps, Pola said.

“It’s a senseless killing and we’re appealing to the public for help to find the suspects involved,” Pola said.

The three suspects were described as three 17- or 18-year-old Hispanic males. The first stood 5 feet 7 inches tall, has short black hair and was dressed in all black. The second was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds and the third stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds, Pola said. They fled in a silver SUV, he said.
