Union City Teachers Strike To Continue Wednesday

The strike will enter its third day Wednesday, with no talks announced between the district and teachers union.

UNION CITY, CA — Striking teachers will be on the picket line instead of in the classroom Wednesday for the third straight day as they demand a 10 percent pay raise. The New Haven Unified School District's last, best, and final offer was 3 percent off-the schedule for 2018-19, and 1 percent on-the-schedule for 2019-20. Negotiations broke down when the offer was rejected without a counter offer being presented.

Dollar-wise, the district's offer breaks down to a one-time payment of approximately $2,900 for the current school year based on the teacher’s average salary of $96,000. The one percent pay raise would be about $1,000 per year going forward.

The district said Tuesday that it "would like nothing more than to bring this strike to an end. We recognize that this job action can only brought to an end through constructive dialogue and compromise. We are ready to engage in such a conversation when NHTA indicates their readiness."
