Rain Runoff Prompts Health Warning for Venice Beaches
Health officials are warning of high bacteria levels from storm runoff at local beaches.
With rain dousing Southland streets and hillsides and sending storm runoff into the ocean, the county Department of Public Health warned today that the water near storm drains, creeks and rivers could be contaminated with litter and bacteria.
County officials urged people to avoid going into the ocean in areas where runoff is spilling into the ocean.
“Discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers only comprise a small portion of the beach, therefore, anybody who wants to go to the beach will still be able to enjoy their outing,” according to the county. “Swimmers and surfers are advised to stay away from discharge sites.”

The county’s rain advisory will remain in effect until at least 7 a.m. Thursday, but could be expended “depending on further rainfall.”
