Why Local Families Celebrate School Choice

California Virtual Academy @ Los Angeles students celebrate National School Choice Week in Mar Vista with former LA Clippers player

Every parent knows each of his or her children is unique and special. Why do we take this for granted, and expect each child to learn the same way?

This week is National School Choice Week, a celebration that answers that question. With more than 990 events across California and 11,000 across the country, it is designed to shine a spotlight on the importance of different education options to meet students’ unique and special needs.

On January 27, parents, students and teachers with California Virtual Academy @ Los Angeles met at Mar Vista Park to celebrate their ability to choose full-time, online public charter schooling with California Virtual Academy. They were treated to a special guest, former LA Clippers player and founder of Real Run Academy Lamond Murray, who led the students in games and physical education sessions.

Students who have chosen online school are benefiting from the changing attitudes that once supported a “one-size-fits-all” approach to education. From bullying to social pressure, feeling overwhelmed by a large classroom or not being challenged enough—many students have found an excellent fit with the individualized attention that California Virtual Academy provides.

Parents tell me how they relish the opportunity to be involved in their children’s education every step of the way at California Virtual Academy. They feel supported and relieved when they see their children engaged and thriving, and receiving regular and consistent communication from state-credentialed teachers. Thanks to California Virtual Academy’s “Individualized Learn Plans” using the K12 curriculum that meets or exceeds state’s standards, students can learn in a way that best meets their needs.
