CALIFORNIA — "The East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer was the most prolific and notorious serial killer in California history. His crime spree spanned from 1976 to 1986 and resulted in 12 murders, 45 rapes and over 120 residential burglaries." So far, he's gotten away with his crimes.

A posting on Facebook last week by Walnut Creek Police was an attempt to jog the memories of those who lived through the serial killer's reign of terror. Someone knows something they did not reveal to police at the time.

The drawing of the suspect could also catch the attention of someone who recognizes the man depicted in the police sketch, although he has now aged by decades. He would now be 60 to 75 years old.

He began his crimes in the Sacramento area, worked his way through the Bay Area, and then proceeded to Southern California. His crimes became more violent as he progressed.

Although this is a cold case, it has continued to haunt law enforcement agents. They say the rapist and killer ruined lives and needs to be held accountable. Nearly two years ago, the FBI set up a special web page with information about the serial killer, along with offering a $50,000 reward for his arrest and conviction. Special Agent Marcus Knutson points out that the suspect took things from the crime scenes, especially coins and jewelry.

“We know that our guy took items,” Knutson said. “So if for some reason people—whether their family member is deceased or they’re cleaning out a storage unit—come across a weird collection of items such as women’s ID’s, rings, earrings—anything that’s out of the ordinary—it could be significant.”

The FBI also has a recording of a phone call believe to have been made by the serial killer. (Warning: Audio is disturbing)

Two of the rapes took place in Walnut Creek, and police want justice. They concluded their Facebook post with "Someone knows who this suspect is. Living or dead, he was someone's relative, co-worker or neighbor. Help us bring justice to his many victims by reviewing the information below."
