BART Wants To Launch Policing Drones In East Bay Stations (patch.com) — BART is considering a 180-day pilot program to deploy policing drones, initially between Bay Fair and Hayward, with a district-wide policy that would also apply to Walnut Creek stations. The drones could respond to trespassing, vandalism, emergencies, inspections, and crowd control, while collecting video and sensor data accessible to multiple BART departments. Directors are set to vote on the proposal October 8, and Walnut Creek riders may see new aerial surveillance if it moves forward.
2. Walnut Creek's Very Fancy Outdoor Furniture Store Has Sadly Closed Bay Area Telegraph (bayareatelegraph.com) — A high-end outdoor furniture store, Yardbird, has closed its showroom on North Broadway, leaving another empty retail space in downtown Walnut Creek. Residents still have local options like Patioworld and Terra Outdoor Living for upscale patio pieces, but the closure ends Yardbird's in-person shopping experience and raises questions about what business might move into the prominent space next.
3. Calicraft Planning Permanent Location In Walnut Creek (whatnow.com) — Calicraft Brewing is moving ahead with a permanent brewery and taproom at 2700 Mitchell Drive in Walnut Creek's Shadelands area, replacing its temporary beer garden setup. The Walnut Creek-based brewer already runs its Shadelands and downtown Upstairs taprooms, plus locations in Fairfield and Davis, and plans to consolidate operations at the new two-story brick-and-mortar space.
4. Amateur comedian busted after police link San Ramon theft footage to video of his standup routine (mercurynews.com) — A 33-year-old Walnut Creek man was arrested after police linked tattoos seen in a video of his standup comedy routine to surveillance footage from a cash-register theft at a San Ramon Starbucks. Officers later went to his Walnut Creek apartment and booked him on a grand theft warrant, though he has since been released and no charges have yet been filed.
5. RESTORE launches Fall fundraising season to expand life-changing safe homes in Contra Costa County (contracostaherald.com) — RESTORE, a faith-based transitional housing nonprofit, is launching its fall fundraising season to support a fifth safe home serving Contra Costa County families. One of its key events will be held November 6 at Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, where attendees can hear powerful testimonials and learn how to support Christ-centered recovery and housing programs for local residents.
