Assistance League Launches Legacy of Literacy

One of 120 chapters, Assistance League ®of Diablo Valley, 450 member volunteers strong, will participate in Assistance League’s Legacy of Literacy to be held nationwide from February 10 through 25, 2018. Implemented through Operation School Bell®, a nationally acclaimed, hands-on philanthropic program that has served the local community since 1994 by providing clothing and a shoe card to school students, Legacy of Literacy involves collecting donated new and gently used children’s books and distributing them to identified youngsters living in Contra Costa County.

Legacy of Literacy seeks to offset overwhelming statistics that adversely affect our community’s most treasured asset, its children. Did you know that in low income neighborhoods, there is only one book for every 300 children? Two thirds of fourth grade students who read below grade level will face the threats of financial instability and/or incarceration in future years. Studies show that the single most influencing factor to a child’s success in school is through an early introduction to books and reading.
