Fatality At Powell St. BART Causing Systemwide Delays This Morning

A male who witnesses said jumped in front of a BART train was killed on the Powell Street station tracks in San Francisco this morning, closing the station and causing major delays systemwide, a BART spokeswoman said.

The victim was reported under an East Bay-bound train at about 7:55 a.m., BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

She said witnesses reported seeing the person jump in front of the train. He was pronounced dead in the station.

There was limited service between San Francisco and the East Bay as of about 8:30 a.m.

Passengers headed to San Francisco from the Dublin/Pleasanton, Richmond and Fremont lines will need to off-board their trains in Oakland and wait for a San Francisco International Airport-bound train, Trost said.

There is extensive crowding on BART platforms in the East Bay, Trost said.

San Francisco Municipal Railway is offering free rides for BART passengers this morning in an effort to alleviate crowding on BART.
