octors and staff, led by Concord physician, went to India and transformed lives with 17 surgeries.

Seventeen John Muir Health physicians and staff recently embarked on a cardiac surgical mission to India, helping those in serious need of treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

Many of these staff members volunteered their time and paid their own expenses for this mission, which, in years past, included similar trips to the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Ecuador.

The 5-½-day surgical mission was spearheaded by Dr. Ramesh Veeragandham, co-director of cardiovascular surgery at John Muir Health in Concord, and culminated in 16 open heart surgeries and one vascular surgery to patients ranging from 10 to 60 years old.

According to Dr. Veeragandham: “We imparted a lot on the local team. We showed them different procedures that are not routine, some of which had never been done in that institution. Our goal is not just to do few cases, but to instill a great deal of confidence in the local team. This enables them to perform similar cases that can benefit hundreds of patients.”
