Knitters Beautify Downtown Walnut Creek
Two landmark trees on Locust Street display Knitfitti, fashion-forward knitted art designed to generate smiles in Walnut Creek.

From Rowcliffe Communications Group: Walnut Creek’s newest public art project didn’t require hammers, nails or paint – just lots of knitting needles. Two landmark locust trees on Locust Street are now sporting Knitfitti, fashion-forward knitted art designed to generate a smile or two. New knitted art works are popping up as the knitters keep creating.
Created by the FashionKnit knitting community and lead by Walnut Creek Downtown, several Walnut Creek residents, inspired by Knitress Extraordinaire Jeanine Bould, spent countless hours knitting yards of yarn during weekly gatherings at Jeanine’s FashionKnit, a local knitting store. The results are a colorful, flower-filled garland embracing one of the trees and a playful, multicolored tubular coat decorated with fish, stars and flowers, enclosing the other tree (pictured here). The FashionKnit community donated their time and materials to create this art exhibit.
“We love Walnut Creek and as passionate knitters, couldn’t think of a better way to beautify our downtown,” said Jeanine Bould. The current Knitfitti will be in place for six months. More Knitfitti projects are planned for 2017.
