Patelco Board Chair Honored with Top Industry Association Award

National Credit Union Association, CUES, Names East Bay's Peter Hanelt the 2016 Distinguished Director For His Work With Patelco CU

Patelco Credit Union is proud to announce that board chair Peter Hanelt, CPA, has been named by CUES as its 2016 Distinguished Director in recognition of his achievements in support of innovative member initiatives resulting in a stronger credit union. CUES is an independent association for credit union executives that educates and develops credit union leaders.

“I am honored to be recognized by CUES and extremely pleased to witness the success of the board’s efforts to return value to our members and better their financial lives,” said Hanelt. “Patelco’s success ultimately depends on our ability to create new ways to help our members build lifelong financial health and well-being.”

Hanelt has been a Patelco Credit Union board member since 1996 and board chair since 2011. Under his leadership, Patelco began offering two unique programs aimed at helping members.

  • The Member Give-Back Program: Provides fee-free mortgage loans and reduced loan rates to members.
  • Switch-to-Save: Designed to help members and potential members improve their financial well-being through reduced auto and credit card rates, helping 12,00 members save more than $12 million for the estimated life of the loans switched.

“I am extremely proud that CUES has recognized Pete this year,” said Erin Mendez, President and CEO of Patelco. “Pete provides strong and consistent financial guidance to Patelco. His advice has helped us create better products & services with higher value to our members and be better stewards on managing expenses, which ultimately allowed us to offer members significantly better savings and lending rates.”

The CUES Distinguished Director award is presented to a credit union board or committee member whose achievements have strengthened their credit union. Hanelt will be honored at CUES’ Directors Conference, December 11–14, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Hawaii.
