No Murder Charges Filed In Killing Of Gas Station Worker

The worker was killed Saturday​ during an attempted robbery of the Chevron station at 2701 Contra Loma Boulevard in Antioch.

ANTIOCH, CA — An arrest has been made in connection with the killing of a gas station clerk over the weekend, though authorities have not filed murder charges.

Police arrested Ronald Jackson Jr., a 20-year-old resident of Antioch, in the Saturday killing of cashier James Williams, 36, at a Chevron Gas Station.

"Our Investigations Bureau presented this case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office today, and they have elected to charge Jackson with with robbery, possession of stolen property, and a firearm enhancement, but declined to charge him with murder," the Antioch Police Department said late Wednesday.

Williams was killed Saturday during an attempted robbery of the Chevron station at 2701 Contra Loma Boulevard in Antioch, according to authorities, who told NBC Bay Area that a shootout occurred.

Officials told NBC News that Williams chased after the two robbery suspects in the parking lot, and one of them was hit in the leg. Police said the suspect returned fire and fatally shot Williams in the head, though under the law, killing could be considered self-defense, the outlet reported.

Antioch police said officers were called to the Extra Mile convenience store shortly after 2 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Williams inside the store with a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers attempted to provide life-saving aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
