Highlights of the walk include seeing concrete arrows that were installed in the 1920s as part of a nationwide system to guide airmail pilots on transcontinental flights. At one time, these sites also had a tower with rotating lights for nighttime visibility. When radar and radio communications made the beacons obsolete, the beacon towers were torn down, but the concrete arrows remain.
No advance registration is required. A more detailed description of the April 11 route is available at www.walnut-creek.org/walks.
