Earthquakes Rattle Northern California Coast

The quake was initially measured at magnitude 4.0 and struck at a depth of about 3 miles.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck the California early Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at 3:19 a.m. at a depth of about 3.1 miles. Its magnitude was initially recorded at 4.0.

The epicenter was in San Benito County, about 3.3 miles north of Pinnacles, according to the USGS.

It was followed by a series of smaller quakes throughout the morning, including two magnitude 2.6 quakes and one magnitude 2.7, all northwest of Pinnacles, according to the USGS.
