Church Vandalism In Watsonville: Police Seek Suspect

Watsonville police have been searching for the man who vandalized St. Patrick's Parish and are now asking for the public's help.

WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville police detectives are asking for the public's help in identifying a man caught on camera vandalizing a Main Street church.

Surveillance footage from Tuesday afternoon shows the the suspect walking toward the front doors of St. Patrick’s Parish with a spray paint can in hand. About 15 seconds later, he’s walking away from the area.

The suspect allegedly tagged the church's front doors with a derogatory Spanish word.

Watsonville police have been searching for the man and are now asking for the public's help.

Tuesday's incident was the second vandalism at the church in six weeks, Watsonville police said. The first vandalism, which was also caught on camera, shows a man throwing a rock at one of the church’s windows, according to the WPD.

The suspect in both videos appears to be the same person, but footage from the first vandalism is grainy.

"With this week’s clear footage, we’re hoping someone can recognize this man," the WPD said. "Total damage to the church is estimated to be more than $1,500.

"This crime does not meet the requirements of a hate crime," the WPD continued. "But when arrested, the suspect will face felony charges of vandalism to a church ... ."
