WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville voters were asked to vote on Measure Y to renew a half-percent retail sales tax for public safety and parks programs. Proponents held a significant lead over opponents, with 76.2 percent of the vote.

Measure Y seeks to renew the half-percent retail sales tax for a public safety fund used. Police services, fire and 911 emergency response, and parks and recreation would benefit from the tax.
Police would get 54 percent of the money, fire would get 38 percent of the money and parks would get eight percent of the money to hire additional workers, upgrade equipment and increase youth services, according to the city attorney's analysis of the measure.

A citizen's oversight committee is tasked with ensuring the funds are used for the correct purpose.
