Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf Bans Plastic Straws

Seventeen wharf restaurants and fish markets will participate in the effort to limit plastic use.

MONTEREY, CA -- Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey has joined a growing list of cities and businesses opting to replace single-use plastic straws with alternatives that are better for the environment. Plastic straws at the wharf will be replaced with paper or reusable straws, according to the wharf's business association.

Seventeen wharf restaurants and fish markets will participate in the effort to limit plastic use.

Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland and Alameda have also proposed ordinances to ban single-use plastic straws and single-use, disposable food containers.

Those items include lids, stirrers, utensils, condiment packages, sleeves, beverage plugs and plastic bottles.

In November 2016, California also banned single-use plastic bags.
