Remembering Bernardo Bertolucci: A Film Maker Who Made An Impact
Growing up in NYC - Bertolucci was one of the "it" Directors, before "it" was self-conscious- both as trendy and as a rebuke of being trendy

I AM pleading ignorance, as a result of a pointed tip from my dearest friend, Robin Utt Fajardo, and now I must add a link that explains what Robin had gracefully indicated was her issue with "Last Tango In Paris". Frankly...as a teen (I am about to confirm- yup- still very much and/or barely a teen: accuracy and vanity, both,) I barely could believe the scene...I didn't realize there had been even more, that was way less, as we all have become more enlightened, re: ME2, so please know I stand by my memory as a journalist and a member of PATCH- I take neither responsibility lightly and I stand by myself, my team and my friend, Robin Utt Fajardo, who is an awesome person, woman, mother, wife and friend, and also, the daughter of one of the greatest Hollywood producers ever, Kenneth Utt. Liz Taylor handed him his Oscar on Live TV- ABC-back when it was only one of 3 alphabet broadcast networks- no cable, as in 0.) https://www.theguardian.com/fi...
Remembering Bernardo Bertolucci with good cheer...tongue in cheek but no jeering of anyone.
It was about a time and place when you virtually couldn’t live in NYC and admit you didn’t see The Conformist- it was “THE” art film that put The Paris theater near the Plaza Hotel on the map and gave Woody Allen license to abuse Ingmar Bergman by idolizing him. Such a gripping movie about fascism, it should be re-released now for all of us to pay tribute to Bernardo Bertolucci, and learn from a master film maker what we may be up against.
The Last Emperor made him never going to be a household name in the USA (what is that, Greek?) but I will never forget Julia Child shriek at how she didn’t know if she’d ever be able to make another souffle after what Marlon Brando had done on screen.
It may have been the only time she weeped and I do believe Meryl Streep protected her by refusing to shoot the scene when a broken Child breaks down after seeing Last Tango In Paris.

“I can’t turn to margarine- what’s to become of me?”
She rebounded like a champ, then doubled the amount of butter in every recipe and I think I read something about her and Brando on Page Six...the gossip section of the N.Y. Post.
