WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA – Director Michael Morris is lucky to be alive today thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan who pulled him over when his Tesla inexplicably caught fire in West Hollywood Friday. Actress Mary McCormack tweeted a video of the Tesla Model S that burst into flames, and said the her husband was unaware that the car was on fire while stuck in traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard.
The incident was "out of the blue," the actress said, before thanking the "kind couple" who flagged Morris down and told him to pull over.
"This is an extraordinarily unusual occurrence and we are investigating the incident to find out what happened," a Tesla spokeswoman told KTLA in an email. "Our initial investigation shows that the cabin of the vehicle was totally unaffected by the fire due to our battery architecture, which is designed to protect the cabin in the very rare event that a battery fire occurs."

Citing data from the National Fire Protection Association and U.S. Federal Highway Administration, Tesla told KTLA that Tesla vehicles are 10 times less likely to catch fire than gasoline-fueled cars. Tesla cars use lithium-ion batteries, which ignite slower and burn in a more controlled manner compared to gasoline, the news station said.
Firefighters quickly put out the flames, and no one was hurt, ABC7 reported.
