Your Guide to the Perfect Sunday Funday

Busy Friday and Saturday nights are a given at bars across the country, but here in West Hollywood, the weekend fun doesn’t stop on Saturday night. Thanks to the temperate climate of beautiful sunny Southern California, the West Hollywood nightlife scene steps in to the light once a week for a “Sunday Funday.”

Urban Dictionary defines "Sunday Funday" as "a Sunday that typically starts out with mimosas or Bloody Marys, aka hair of the dog." It then typically continues throughout the day until about 6:30 p.m. "Since the ‘Funday’ ends early enough, you can rest assured that you will go to bed…early enough to be perfectly refreshed for work on Monday morning.”

The concept of a Sunday Funday was introduced to me when I first came of age and moved into the West Hollywood area. For years, I assumed that Fundays were a common practice around the country until last Sunday when a recent transplant from New York commented to me, “It is so crazy that [Santa Monica Boulevard] is packed on a Sunday afternoon. This does not happen in New York.”

Although there are probably many factors (i.e. the weather, proximity of drinking establishments, and access to other public venues such as parks and beaches) that hinder Sunday Fundays from becoming common practice in other cities, the West Hollywood bars have most certainly perfected the art of squeezing every last ounce of fun out of the weekend.

As with many excursions out, a sense of spontaneity is important, but a game plan can’t hurt. Having gone through many a Funday myself, I present to you the guide to the perfect (and cheapest) West Hollywood Sunday Funday.

Step One: Brunch

Every good Sunday starts out with brunch, but why waste money on expensive morning cocktails? After chowing down on chilaquiles or a whole wheat blueberry pancake at or , walk down to and enjoy bottomless mimosas from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

While the service can be a little slow on the refills at times, the unlimited flow of alcohol for just $9.95 is a deal that cannot be beat on the boulevard.  And if you happen to have skipped brunch, I recommend the fiesta bowl with chicken.  With rice, beans, vegetables, cheese and chicken, the dish is like a delicious burrito without the tortilla. Save the calories for the drinks!

Step Two: Change Location

Although Fiesta’s two-for-one happy hour starts at 4 p.m., a change of scenery is always a good thing as the sun begins to lower in the sky, and heading over to for Size U is a great option to shake things up.

Offering a “Beer Bust” from 4 to 8 p.m., patrons can order $2 draft beers, $5 personal pitchers, or even $10 full pitchers that can be put to use playing beer pong at any of the numerous tables set up around the outside patio. For those who shy away from competitive drinking games, there is also the option of some electronic fun with Nintendo Wiis set up in the inside cabana.

Step Three: One Last Meal

The end of Beer Bust can serve as a good stopping point for many Sunday Fundayers. With and the newly opened Fresh East just a few steps away, dinner and an early bedtime are just the way to ease in to the workweek. But for those who want to dance the night away, there is no reason to leave .

As the sun sets, Size U offers grilled burgers and hot dogs and brings out DJs from all over the globe, as well as a scoreboard above the dance floor that counts down to numerous bars open until midnight when you can turn in to a pumpkin and head home.

West Hollywood boasts a unique nightlife scene the whole week through, but don’t forget that the daytime has much to offer as well. Happy Fundaying to you all.
