4th of July Safety Tips

The 4th of July is just around the corner which means that fireworks, BBQ's and pool parties happen all over this great nation. This is the time of year families come together to celebrate this great nation and create wonderful memories. This is also that time of year when many people including pets and children end up in a hospital emergency room or perhaps worse.

I am encouraging people everywhere to think about safety this year by releasing these 4th of July safety tips. This is an article that should be shared with many. I am hoping that this year many people will not have to make that trip to the emergency room.

As you know, California is experiencing a extremely severe drought as well the most hazardous fire conditions ever seen. With little chance of seeing any rain for the rest of the year, conditions will only worsen however as this pertains to 4th of July safety tips, I will address fireworks, BBQ's and campfires.

Now is not the time to think of fireworks especially if you live in or near the foothills of California. All it takes is one spark or one bottle rocket and we may have an extremely violent fire on our hands. When it comes to fireworks, leave it to the professionals. There are numerous professional shows taking place and would be a better alternative. True it is always more exciting to light your own fireworks however you can reduce the chance of fire and even injuries such as blindness or severe burns by enjoying a professional show.

I know that this year enforcement and confiscation of illegal fireworks will be at an all time high due to the current conditions. Don't take the chance on getting caught! If caught, fines can be up to $10,000.

Also remember to take care of your pets this 4th of July as many pets are afraid of loud noises or hisses made by fireworks. On this day, the animal shelters are hit hard with strays who ran out of their yard looking for shelter from the loud and strange noises.  Be sure to lock your pets indoors (especially if you leave the house) and if you have to, board your pets with your veterinarian for one night. Your pets are part of your family so please take care of them as such.

If you plan on going camping, think twice about starting that campfire. Many major wildland fires have been caused by campfires and those responsible have paid a high price. As you prepare for your trip, always check with rangers to see what restrictions are in place. As you drive up, please read all signs and follow all fire warnings.

4th of July is the day that the BBQ comes in handy. Make sure that if you are cooking with charcoal and lighter fluid, use common sense. Lighter fluid is very flammable and can splash on clothing while preparing the BBQ. After initially lighting the BBQ, stand back as flames will quite high and make sure that the BBQ is in a clear opening with no trees or patio cover overhead.

Have fun and have a safe 4th of July!!
