Brr! Cold Weather Alert Issued for Woodland Hills

Children, the elderly and people with special medical needs are especially vulnerable during the cold snap, county health officials said.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- With winter weather and gusting winds making it feel like Christmas, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Monday extended a cold weather alert for much of the area through Tuesday, and in the San Fernando Valley through Thursday.

"Children, the elderly and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during such cold snaps," said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, the county's interim health officer. "Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don't get too cold when they are outside."

The cold weather alert will be in effect through Tuesday in Los Angeles County mountains, Pomona and the San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys. The alert will be in effect through Thursday in the San Fernando Valley and through Friday in the Antelope Valley.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority's Winter Shelter Program will be operating through March 1. Information about shelter locations and transportation to shelters is available online at www.lahsa.org/ces/winter-shelt... or by calling the county's information line at 211.

County officials warned residents not to use stoves, barbecues or ovens to heat their homes, noting that such appliances can produce carbon monoxide, which can be deadly.
