Elements Montessori Woodland Hills Hidden Educational Gem

Question: What do the founders of Google, Wikipedia, the creator of "The Sims" video game and Julia Childs all have in common?

Answer: They, along with a large handful of history’s most creative minds, were educated by the Montessori method – and your child can be, too.

Holding the prestigious title as “The only AMS (American Montessori Society) MEMBER Montessori” in the area, Elements Montessori is located South of Ventura directly across from the Woodland Hills Golf Club. Sharing the same space as the Woodland Hills Community Church, Elements is a secular learning center nestled in a quiet residential community. The surrounding pepper trees gives its second story classroom a peaceful tree house feeling – an ideal setting that allows children to relax and truly enjoy a rich learning experience.

This school, which teaches kinder – fifth grades is founded on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952). Its education model focuses on each child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. The materials are unique. For example, second grade students practice with color coded, skill graded, and hands-on tools that allow them to conjugate lengthy sentences with fun and ease, or construct a trinomial cube. A child not only sees the symbol for 1, 1000, or ½, but they can experience each corresponding quantity in their hands.

Montessori classrooms are made up of mixed ages. Published statistics show that when an older child helps a younger child, it is actually the older child who benefits most from the experience. It enhances their self-esteem and develops their self confidence.

Montessori students are allowed to make choices, and think for themselves. According to Element’s founder, Molly O’Malia, free thought does not mean there isn’t structure. “Teachers make sure students have satisfied their weekly work plan, but students can choose their work, its sequence, and remain on a topic for more in-depth study. Some children will be working on math, others on language, or science, or geography,” she says, adding, “ You will find the teachers giving small group lessons specifically targeted to the skill level of the children present at the lesson. In a Montessori classroom academic strengths are celebrated and differences supported therefore there are no limits to what each child can learn.
