Ouch! California the 3rd Least Charitable State?

Certainly everyone reading this article is generous and caring--but apparently the motto of some fellow Californians is "Bah, Humbug!"

As you’ve been rushing around buying holiday gifts for friends and family, it’s hard to be accused of being stingy. But the personal finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2015’s Most & Least Charitable States and California did not fare well. Shouldn’t the Zuckerbergs boost our average?

WalletHub looked at eight key metrics such as volunteer rate, the percentage of taxpayers who donated to charity and growth in charitable giving. California scored in the bottom half of states in nearly category:

  • 35th – Volunteer Rate
  • 36th – % of Donated Income
  • 32nd – % of Population Who Claim to Have Donated Time
  • 40th – Growth in Charitable Giving (2012 vs. 2006)
  • 21st – Number of Volunteering Hours per Capita
  • 32nd – Number of Charities per Capita

Other states must be picking up the slack for California because the United States ranked second overall in 2015’s World Giving Index and in the top 10 for two of the three charitable-giving behaviors that are tracked by the index. So, which states are most generous?
