Kennedy Announces Gov Bid While Driving - Raising Eyebrows

Her announcement - she alternates between keeping her eyes on the camera and the road - comes during distracted driving awareness month.

Maybe someone should have put the brakes on Cary Kennedy's idea on how she wanted to announce that she's running for governor. The former state treasurer on Facebook Live while she was driving after picking up her daughter at school. It's Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Colorado.

"I'm doing something a little different," she said.

Kennedy, who is the former Chief Financial Officer for Denver and is seeking the Democratic nomination, can be seen switching glances between the road, notes taped to the dashboard, and her daughter holding the camera in the passenger seat.

While Kennedy enters the race with a strong reputation - and is the only one in the race who had won a statewide contest - her announcement setting raised eyebrows around the country.

Kennedy's announcing while driving came less than one week after the state announced a new effort to end distracted driving.

"Coloradans are not paying attention to how dangerous distracted driving really is," said CDOT's Transportation Safety Director Darrell Lingk, kicking off National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The unwanted attention led Kennedy's campaign to issue a statement saying that the campaign had several people on the street monitoring traffic, it was done near her home, and she was diving very slowly.
