ARVADA, CO — After droughts in recent years, the rainy spring has been a relief for many Colorado cities and towns; however, the wet weather has presented challenges for the City of Arvada parks staff and their open space maintenance plans, officials said.

The city has received inquiries from residents who are concerned that grass isn't being mowed in some parks and athletic fields, officials said. The city said that parks staff is mowing "every day that weather permits," and continues to follow a planned maintenance schedule in an "organized fashion."

The mowing schedule for open space areas begins in east Arvada and travels in a steady pattern to west Arvada, officials said.

During a regular season, it takes about three to four weeks to complete mowing in the city, which includes hundreds of acres of native grasses in more than 100 parks. Once the first cycle has been completed, crews start the pattern over again.

The unusually wet weather has "greatly reduced opportunities for mowing and has delayed the regular maintenance schedule," the city said in a news update.

"Additionally, if you live near an open space area, you may have noticed that grasses and weeds are growing at a faster-than-normal rate due to the additional moisture."

The city thanked residents for their patience during the slowed process.
