V-22 Ospreys are designed to combine the high-speed performance of a turboprop aircraft with the functionality of a helicopter — Ospreys can take off vertically and travel at high speeds.
V-22 Ospreys were created after the failure of Operation Eagle Claw during the Iran hostage crisis in 1980. President Jimmy Carter ordered U.S. Armed Forces to rescue 52 embassy staff who were being held captive in Tehran. Three of the eight helicopters that were sent to rescue the captives weren't operating properly and the mission was aborted. One helicopter crashed into a transport aircraft, killing eight servicemen.
